Acne Scars

Acne is a chronic inflammatory condition that occurs when the hair follicles get plugged with oil & dead skin cells, leading to the formation of comedones (blackheads and whiteheads), papules, pustules, nodules, and often scars. It commonly affects teens but due to the current lifestyle, is seen in adults too. It primarily affects skin with a relatively high number of oil glands, including the face, upper part of the chest, and back. The resulting appearance can lead to anxiety, reduced self-esteem, and, in extreme cases, depression.

Acne Scars are caused by inflammation within the dermis and are estimated to affect 95% of people facing it. Abnormal healing and dermal inflammation create the scar. Scarring is most likely to take place with severe skin conditions but may occur within any form of it.

It commonly occurs in adolescence and affects an estimated 80–90% of teenagers in the Western world. Children and adults may also be affected before and after puberty. Although it becomes less common in adulthood, it persists in nearly half of affected people into their twenties, thirties, and a few in their forties. A common factor is the excessive growth of the bacterium Cutibacterium, which is present on the skin.
