Lichen Planus is an inflammatory condition of the skin and mucous membranes. It occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks cells of the skin or mucous membranes.
A 56-year-old female client came in with massive irregular lesions on her lower legs and hands. The lesions were extremely itchy and scaly. She had been using self-medicated Ayurvedic Skin Preparations from local pharmacies, but the condition had simply worsened.
Ayurvedic perspective of this particular case based on symptoms presented was that of Kushtha Roga (with Kapha and Vata Dosha imbalance).
A comprehensive Ayurvedic treatment using combinations of classical formulations along with Ahara (dietary modification) and Vihara (lifestyle modification) was prescribed.
The treatment principle used here was to first ignite the Agni (digestive fire) and then remove the toxins accumulated in the body.
Oral medicines were then given to pacify the symptoms and rejuvenate and restore the body tissues (Shaman and Rasayan Chikitsa)
The results showed a considerable improvement in the skin lesions and symptoms like itching etc. More importantly, there were no new lesions seen and no adverse effects of the prescribed drugs were reported.
