The Liver is the second largest and the most complex organ in the body after the brain. It performs a number of functions from digestion to detoxification. While our Liver has an incredible ability to rejuvenate and heal itself, increased exposure to toxins like alcohol and environmental pollutants could certainly damage the organ. We at Orijine have put together a few Ayurvedic tips to keep your Liver healthy.
In Ayurveda , the Liver is referred to as Yakrut and it is recognised as an organ whose functioning and health is directly linked to one’s survival. Our Liver works ceaselessly to filter out our blood and hence is regarded as a primary organ for detoxification.
1. A balanced diet
A healthy plant-based diet with healthy fats, whole grains and a lot of fruits and green veggies could work wonders for your body. Ayurveda says that foods that are bitter like amla, bitter gourd, neem and even turmeric are good for both immunity and liver health. Make sure you include beetroots, leafy vegetables, carrots, apples, pomegranate as they’re also good for the Liver.
2. Don’t delay or skip meals
Timing is everything! Apart from eating a healthy diet, Ayurveda also recommends that you eat your last meal earlier for better digestion and metabolism. Eating meals earlier in the day reduces one’s chances of developing a fatty Liver by 21%.
3. Sleep well and workout
The human body needs a minimum of 7 hours of sleep on a daily basis. Work and deadlines will always have to be met but try your best to not compromise your sleep. Most of your body functions happen while you’re asleep. The most important is 10 pm – 2 pm which is when your Liver is working hard at detoxification.
It’s also important to maintain a healthy weight. If you’re a person with a high calorie intake or if you’re dealing with obesity, make sure you formulate an exercise routine to regulate your weight. Keeping your weight in check also keeps your Liver free from fat accumulation.
4. Drink a lot of water
60% of the human body contains water; hydration is the key to keeping your Liver healthy. Drinking water helps dilute your blood which in turn helps your Liver filter it out easier. So the thicker the blood, the harder the job for your Liver.
You can also begin your day with a glass of lemon water, apart from being high in antioxidants it’s also great to clear your digestive tract and boost your Agni (enzymes).
5. Avoid alcohol and smoking
Kick the butt and the bottle for a good cause, a healthier Liver! Both tobacco and alcohol as mentioned earlier much like the liver are fiery according to Ayurveda, so they’re a definite no-no.
6. Do a monthly cleanse and detox
Use of Mild Purgatives once a month . Herbs like like Triphala, trivruta also helps clear congestion from the liver and thus improves metabolism and fat digestion.
7. Start yourself on Herbal supplements
There are a number of Ayurvedic herbs like gooseberry/avala, turmeric/ haldi, aloe Vera, Kutki , Bhumiamalaki, punarnava, Guduchi etc. that help in maintaining the health and normal functioning of the liver. Start by understanding your body type and predisposition to different liver diseases. Please remember that while these supplements should be taken regularly, consult an Ayurvedic physician before you do so.
Most of us are accustomed to getting over the counter medication to relieve pains, aches and itches. However, some of these medications in inappropriate doses can harm your Liver. Make sure to check with your physician before resorting to self-medication. Additionally, talk to your Physician about getting vaccinated for Hepatitis A and B; prevention is after all better than cure.
